Did you guys catch the perennially lovely Blake Lively on SNL this week? While she didn’t wear much for her opener (did you notice that teeny red dress? It was kinda hard to see), she did sport her signature Gossip Girl hairstyle — Serena van der Woodsen’s hair always looks perfectly unperfect.
Blake’s Gossip Girl hairstylist Jennifer Johnson said getting Serena’s hair is all about mixing up the textures—that’s what gives Lively that sexy, tousled look. Here’s how to snag her hairstyle in three simple steps:
- Johnson first uses Shu Uemura Depsea Repair Foundation on her long, layered wet hair to help create volume.
- Next, she blows Blake’s hair dry without a brush so it doesn’t get too straight.
- To create Serena’s signature bedhead-y look, Johnson uses both a curling iron and a straightening iron, taking random strands throughout the hair and curling some and straightening others. Don’t stress if some parts look more curly or straight than others—after all, it’s that carefree attitude that makes Serena so sexy. And if the idea of having two scorching-hot hair tools in your bathroom freaks you out, try Conair’s Infiniti Multi-Functional Hair Tool, which can either straighten or curl hair.
I’ve got a rather shameful secret to share with you, readers: I am kinda in love with the Miley Cyrus clothing line at Wal-Mart. (Hey, she did it with Max Azria — sue me!) Aside from digging Miley’s style, I’m also loving her long, gorgeous hair! We got the scoop on the Leonor Greyl hair products Miley uses daily:
Looking for tips to spice up your party makeup this holiday season? Look no further! Project Runway star and L’Oréal Paris consulting makeup artist Collier Strong has some tricks for making your holiday look a gorgeous success:
Dramatic, full lashes
Strong recommends using Telescopic Explosion Mascara, a new mascara with a breakthrough spherical brush offering 360-degree coverage from any and every angle. This mascara is designed to reach even the smallest lashes & separate every little lash from root to tip for explosive definition. “Layer multiple coats and take advantage of how this brush gets every little lash—especially the corners!” Strong says.
Sophisticated red lips
Nothing says instant glamour for the holidays like red lips. Try Colour Riche Anti-Aging Serum Lipcolour in Real Red. “Select a shade that compliments your skin tone based on the undertone of the lipstick itself,” Strong instructs. “Those with fair skin should try reds that have a blue undertone; olive or dark skin should opt for orange undertones.”
Matte eye shadow
Be bold and accessorize any party dress with statement makeup. Try HIP Matte Shadow Duos in any of the five shades. (I like bronze shades with red lips, personally.) Expert tip: “Use shadow along the lash line to give more definition and to blend eyeliner for a softer, smokey effect.”
Striking eyes with eyeliner
Create evening eyes in just one step by applying dramatic eyeliner. Opt for HIP Chrome Eyeliner in Gold, Silver or Purple. “For eyes that really pop, try using the silver or gold liner in the inner corners of the eye,” suggests Strong.

Did you catch Alicia Keys’ hot updo hairstyle at the American Music Awards? Looks like a toughie to copy, eh? Not so! While it might be hard to master Alicia’s performance of her and Jay-Z’s smash hit “Empire State of Mind” while also rocking it solo with her new song “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart”, getting her hairdo is the easy part.
Pantene celebrity hairstylist Tippi Shorter styled Alicia Keys’ hair for the AMAs, and gave us the low-down on how she accomplished this seemingly complicated look. Since Alicia performed twice on stage on top of walking the red carpet, Tippi came up with a fun updo that transformed effortlessly throughout the night. Here’s how Tippi gave Alicia her red carpet ‘do (including some pics she took while styling the starlet!):
- Alicia recently colored her hair a few shades lighter with Clairol, so Tippi started off by washing her hair with Pantene Pro-V Color Revival Shampoo & Conditioner to keep her color looking healthy and vibrant for the camera.
After Alicia’s hair was washed, Tippi sprayed in Pantene Pro-V Detangling Light Conditioning Spray to condition and protect her hair before heat styling. The detangler helped smooth her hair while Tippi blow-dried with a Mason Pearson brush.
- Alicia has always been well known for her braids, so Tippi decided to incorporate a creative twist that involved light, romantic braiding. Tippi wanted to recreate the backward Mohawk braid that she did for Alicia’s most recent music video, so she sectioned the hair into three sections front to back.
Then, she gathered the two outermost sections and secured the in ponytail using Ojon Animated Styling Cream.
- With the center section, Tippi started a braid from the nape all the way to the front, making it a little off center.
- Tippi tucked the end of the braid underneath the main braid and secured with bobby pins.
- To finish the look with strong hold, Tippi used Ojon Tunu Elastik Hairspray and Bed Head Headrush Shine Spray.
Team Edward? Team Jacob? Forget that: I’m on Team Alice. Ashley Greene, who plays bloodsucking siren Alice Cullen in the Twilight saga, turned up the heat at the LA premiere of New Moon with super-sexy pinup-girl hair. (A little reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot, no?)
Here’s how to snag her va-va-voom hairstyle yourself at home:
- Start by blow-drying your hair with a round brush. Keep it a little bouncy, not pin-straight. If you have bangs, brush them forward and keep them separate from the front section of your hair.
- Take the top front section of hair and tease it by dividing it into two tiers:
- Tease the bottom section (that’s closest to your head) with a comb; and
- Comb the top section over to smooth and cover up the teased volume.
- Secure both the top and bottom sections together at the back of your head with hairpins or a large barrette (small hairclips will just mush that extra volume you’ve added).
- If you have bangs, finish by styling them with a curling iron so they frame the face. If you want to give your hairstyle a little more bounce and curl, use a curling iron on your lengths.

What’s Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester’s secret behind her gorgeous ruby pout? (Doesn’t she look disgustingly gorgeous in this picture, by the way? I want to kill her a little bit when I look at it.) I’ll give you a hint — you can find it at the drugstore!
Okay, I’ll tell ya — it’s L’Oreal’s Infallible Plumping Lipgloss in Plumped Red. Says Leighton herself, “L’Oréal Paris’ Infallible Plumping Lipgloss in Plumped Red gives me that extra little color and boost when I really want my lips to pop.” Drugstore makeup? What would Leighton’s prima donna doppelganger Blair Waldorf think?
When will Taylor Swift stop being such a darn cutie? Never, we hope! Taylor sported an adorable faux bob full of ringlets (and possibly faerie dust) at this year’s CMA Awards.
Wanna snag this modern whimsical hairstyle for your next hot date? You don’t even need short hair — I promise! Here’s how to snag Taylor’s style straight from the hairstylist behind the ‘do, Jemma Muradian:
- To achieve this look, Jemma used a one-inch-barrel curling iron and a protective thermal spray by Shu Uemura Irondesign. “It’s really the best ever!” she gushes.
- After spraying your hair, curl it by holding the iron horizontally to get Taylor’s signature ringlets.
- Roll the ends of your lengths up and under themselves, pinning them at the nape of your neck with bobby pins—they’ll be pretty much invisible after you sweep the rest of the curls forward.
- Then, loosen the strands of hair at the top of the crown to mess it up a little so it doesn’t look too “done”.
- Finish by spraying with Elnett Satin Hairspray by L’Oreal to keep your flirtatious locks held in picture-perfect place.
