Blake Lively’s Hairstyle in Three Easy Steps!

December 1st, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

Blake Lively HairstyleDid you guys catch the perennially lovely Blake Lively on SNL this week?  While she didn’t wear much for her opener (did you notice that teeny red dress? It was kinda hard to see), she did sport her signature Gossip Girl hairstyle — Serena van der Woodsen’s hair always looks perfectly unperfect.

Blake’s Gossip Girl hairstylist Jennifer Johnson said getting Serena’s hair is all about mixing up the textures—that’s what gives Lively that sexy, tousled look. Here’s how to snag her hairstyle in three simple steps:

  1. Johnson first uses Shu Uemura Depsea Repair Foundation on her long, layered wet hair to help create volume.
  2. Next, she blows Blake’s hair dry without a brush so it doesn’t get too straight.
  3. To create Serena’s signature bedhead-y look, Johnson uses both a curling iron and a straightening iron, taking random strands throughout the hair and curling some and straightening others. Don’t stress if some parts look more curly or straight than others—after all, it’s that carefree attitude that makes Serena so sexy. And if the idea of having two scorching-hot hair tools in your bathroom freaks you out, try Conair’s Infiniti Multi-Functional Hair Tool, which can either straighten or curl hair.

Alicia Keys’ AMAs Hairstyle How-To

November 17th, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

Alicia Keys AMAs HairstyleDid you catch Alicia Keys’ hot updo hairstyle at the American Music Awards? Looks like a toughie to copy, eh? Not so! While it might be hard to master Alicia’s performance of her and Jay-Z’s smash hit “Empire State of Mind” while also rocking it solo with her new song “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart”, getting her hairdo is the easy part.

Pantene celebrity hairstylist Tippi Shorter styled Alicia Keys’ hair for the AMAs, and gave us the low-down on how she accomplished this seemingly complicated look. Since Alicia performed twice on stage on top of walking the red carpet, Tippi came up with a fun updo that transformed effortlessly throughout the night. Here’s how Tippi gave Alicia her red carpet ‘do (including some pics she took while styling the starlet!):

  1. Alicia recently colored her hair a few shades lighter with Clairol, so Tippi started off by washing her hair with Pantene Pro-V Color Revival Shampoo & Conditioner to keep her color looking healthy and vibrant for the camera.
  2. Alicia Keys2After Alicia’s hair was washed, Tippi sprayed in Pantene Pro-V Detangling Light Conditioning Spray to condition and protect her hair before heat styling. The detangler helped smooth her hair while Tippi blow-dried with a Mason Pearson brush.
  3. Alicia has always been well known for her braids, so Tippi decided to incorporate a creative twist that involved light, romantic braiding. Tippi wanted to recreate the backward Mohawk braid that she did for Alicia’s most recent music video, so she sectioned the hair into three sections front to back.
  4. Alicia Keys Hairstyle BraidThen, she gathered the two outermost sections and secured the in ponytail using Ojon Animated Styling Cream.
  5. With the center section, Tippi started a braid from the nape all the way to the front, making it a little off center.
  6. Tippi tucked the end of the braid underneath the main braid and secured with bobby pins.
  7. To finish the look with strong hold, Tippi used Ojon Tunu Elastik Hairspray and Bed Head Headrush Shine Spray.

Ashley Greene’s New Moon Premiere Hairstyle How-To

November 15th, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

Ashley Greene New Moon premiere hairstyleTeam Edward? Team Jacob? Forget that: I’m on Team Alice. Ashley Greene, who plays bloodsucking siren Alice Cullen in the Twilight saga, turned up the heat at the LA premiere of New Moon with super-sexy pinup-girl hair. (A little reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot, no?)

Here’s how to snag her va-va-voom hairstyle yourself at home:

  1. Start by blow-drying your hair with a round brush. Keep it a little bouncy, not pin-straight. If you have bangs, brush them forward and keep them separate from the front section of your hair.
  2. Take the top front section of hair and tease it by dividing it into two tiers:
    • Tease the bottom section (that’s closest to your head) with a comb; and
    • Comb the top section over to smooth and cover up the teased volume.
  3. Secure both the top and bottom sections together at the back of your head with hairpins or a large barrette (small hairclips will just mush that extra volume you’ve added).
  4. If you have bangs, finish by styling them with a curling iron so they frame the face. If you want to give your hairstyle a little more bounce and curl, use a curling iron on your lengths.

Taylor Swift’s CMA Awards Hairstyle How-To

November 10th, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

taylor-swift CMA Awards HairstyleWhen will Taylor Swift stop being such a darn cutie? Never, we hope! Taylor sported an adorable faux bob full of ringlets (and possibly faerie dust) at this year’s CMA Awards.

Wanna snag this modern whimsical hairstyle for your next hot date? You don’t even need short hair — I promise! Here’s how to snag Taylor’s style straight from the hairstylist behind the ‘do, Jemma Muradian:

  1. To achieve this look, Jemma used a one-inch-barrel curling iron and a protective thermal spray by Shu Uemura Irondesign. “It’s really the best ever!” she gushes.
  2. After spraying your hair, curl it by holding the iron horizontally to get Taylor’s signature ringlets.
  3. Roll the ends of your lengths up and under themselves, pinning them at the nape of your neck with bobby pins—they’ll be pretty much invisible after you sweep the rest of the curls forward.
  4. Then, loosen the strands of hair at the top of the crown to mess it up a little so it doesn’t look too “done”.
  5. Finish by spraying with Elnett Satin Hairspray by L’Oreal to keep your flirtatious locks held in picture-perfect place.

Leighton Meester’s Gorgeous Red Lips Secret

November 10th, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

leighton_meester_red_lips_instyleWhat’s Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester’s secret behind her gorgeous ruby pout? (Doesn’t she look disgustingly gorgeous in this picture, by the way? I want to kill her a little bit when I look at it.) I’ll give you a hint — you can find it at the drugstore!

Okay, I’ll tell ya — it’s L’Oreal’s Infallible Plumping Lipgloss in Plumped Red. Says Leighton herself, “L’Oréal Paris’ Infallible Plumping Lipgloss in Plumped Red gives me that extra little color and boost when I really want my lips to pop.” Drugstore makeup? What would Leighton’s prima donna doppelganger Blair Waldorf think?

Celebrity Makeup How-To: Jennifer Lopez

November 1st, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

Forbes Magazine named Jennifer Lopez the richest person of Latin American descent in Hollywood — and with her work as an actress, singer, dancer, producer, and fashion designer, she’s worked hard to earn that title. Here’s a step by step guide to scoring one of Jennifer’s sultry makeup looks with heavily lined eyes, sculpted cheeks, and glossy nude lips:Jennifer Lopez Makeup

STEP I: FACE MAKEUP
  1. Jennifer starts by creating a clean canvas, so apply liquid foundation as needed.
  2. Use a small amount of foundation to cover any undereye circles and create a base for the eyeshadow on the eyelids.
  3. To achieve Jennifer’s look,  makeup contouring is key. Apply a peachy-pink blush to the apples of cheeks for a natural-looking highlight. Then, blend bronzer from cheekbones toward the area just below the cheeks’ apples to give more shape to the face.

STEP II: EYE MAKEUP

Accentuate the eyes with bronzed, metallic tones and dark eyeliner.

  1. Begin by applying a neutral-toned eyeshadow as a base from the lash line up to the eyebrow.
  2. Use a gold eyeshadow such as Revlon Diamond Lust Sheer Shadow in #605 Grab Me Gold to highlight the eyelid. Apply from the eyelashes up to the crease of the eye.
  3. Use a dark reddish-bronze eyeshadow (I actually use a blush shade: Pur Minerals Marble Powder in Spice) for the crease area. Apply to the crease from corner to corner, then use the skinny edge of your eyeshadow brush to smudge the same shade across the lower lash line.
  4. Line the eyes using black liquid eyeliner along both the upper and lower lash lines all the way from the inner corner to the outer corner.
  5. Apply two coats of black mascara (my current mascara obsession: MAC Zoomlash in Zoom Black).
STEP III: J.LO-WORTHY LIPS
  1. To finish, line the lips with a natural-looking shade of lipliner (try THEVI Automatic Long-lasting Lip liner in Mauve or Heather) just outside the natural lip line to give the appearance of a fuller lip. Keep this very subtle and match the color very closely; we don’t wanr to look fake, just super sexy!
  2. Top lips off with your favorite super-shiny pink lip gloss.

The Kardashians’ Go-To Hairstyle: The Center Part

October 31st, 2009 Posted 4:00 pm

Kim Kardashian Kourtney Khloe HairstylesAside from beautiful satiny hair, smoky bedroom eyes and a shared show on E!, what do to Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian all have in common? The answer: when it comes to hairstyles, they all almost always go for a strong center part.

Why? Celebrity hairstylist Pearson Knight explained to Glamour’s Andrea Pomerantz Lustig why the center part is such a good idea: the simple hairstyle flatters every face shape by making it seem more balanced and symmetrical. Plus, because it makes your eyes and smile easy to see, the style gives off a confident vibe.

Here’s how to Kardashian-ify your ‘do with a strong, sexy center part:

  1. Use a fine-toothed comb to make a precise part on wet hair, then style as usual.
  2. Finish by adding a little gel or hairspray to tame flyaways and to keep the part on the straight and narrow.
